Phiona Mutesi, the person whose vibrant life story inspired the movie Queen of Katwe has kicked of a funds’ sourcing for the construction of the ‘Home of the Queen of Katwe.’
It is a fundraising campaign for an international legacy project named the “Home of Queen of Katwe” of SOM Chess Academy and mentoring programme; the programme which produced Phiona Mutesi.
This legacy home campaign is aimed to raising funds to purchase already identified land and construct a house which will have the following facilities; Chess Academy, Queen of Katwe Film Museum, Mentorsip Center, Computer Community Center and Memorabilia Center.
The facility will serve for chess development, tourism promotion, economic empowerment and crime prevention.
This one month fundraising is targeting to collect UGX 250 million for phase one of the project. The project is already supported by Walt Disney Studios, Microsoft, Uganda Police, Uganda Tourism Board and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. You too can join this noble campaign.

“Queen of Katwe” is based on the vibrant true story of a young girl from the streets of rural Uganda whose world rapidly changes when she is introduced to the game of chess, and, as a result of the support she receives from her family and community, is instilled with the confidence and determination she needs to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess champion.
