MTV MaMa 2016 are on. Uganda has good representation with Bebe Cool, Eddy Kenzo and Sheebah Karungi nominated for Listener’s Choice, Best Live Act and Video of the Year respectively.
The first bunch of nominations that was released on 21, September in South Africa had Eddy Kenzo nominated for Best Live Act. He faces stiff competition from StoneBwoy – Ghana, Cassper Nyovest – South Africa, Mafikizolo – South Africa, and Mr Flavour – Nigeria.
The second and final bunch of nominations was released yesterday night in Nigeria. Bebe Cool and Sheebah Karungi represented.
Sheebah Karungi’s Kisasi Kimu video is nominated for video of the Year. It is the first time for Sheebah to get nominated in the MTV MaMa Awards. Kisasi Kimu faces stiff competition from PHFAT & AL BAIRRE – CAVIAR DREAMS, YOUSSOUPHA – NIQUER MA VIE, ANATII & CASSPER FT NASTY C – JUMP and TIWA SAVAGE FT DR SID – IF I START TO TALK.
Further more, BigSize Extra Large Bebe Cool was nominated for the Listener’s Choice Award. This is an award that is 100 percent determined by the Fans. He faces competition from The Dogg, Jay Rox, Jah Prayzah, Prince Kaybee, Messias Marioca, Meddy, Lij Michael, Kansoul, Yamoto Band, LXG, Den G, Kiss Daniel, EL, Adiouza, Sidiki Diabate, Tamer Hosny, Saad Lamjapred, Reda Taliani, Burna Boy and Sabri Mosbah. With that said, Bebe Cool has an upper hand on this category and stands a better chance of bringing this home.
The three nominations are an upgrade and sign of performance improvement for Uganda. Last year, Uganda had two nominations in MTV MaMa. Bebe Cool was nominated for Video of the Year while Dr Jose Chameleone was nominated for MAMA “Evolution” Award. The stakes are high this year. Considering the interest Ugandans have in these Awards, it is most likely that Uganda will win atleast one MTV MaMa Award this year. Voting is ongoing on MTV MaMa website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Google.
The awards will take place at the Ticketpro Dome in Johannesburg on Saturday 22 October 2016. They are sponsored by Johannesburg Tourism in partnership with Absolut, and in association with Google, MTN and DStv.
