2017 is upon us, coming with several things including new plans, improved strategies, renewed hope and the infamous New Year resolutions!
But first, 2016 was a great year for East African music. Artistes such as Sauti Sol, Diamond Platnumz and his Wasafi squad, Bebe Cool, Eddy Kenzo, Sheebah, Navy Kenzo, Alikiba, Kansoul and DJ Puis among others did several great things for their countries and entire East African region.
Like it is, every accomplishment comes with its new challenges. The same fans that were grateful for the amazing things that their artistes achieved in 2016 are now asking for much more. The fans want to see their favorite artistes perform much better and exceed already set expectations. You can’t blame the fans as their joy and clear return on investment, read support comes when the artistes do better.
So 2017 is here and one East African artiste is holding it by the horns, already making his intentions to perform much better well known to everyone. He is doing this with more action and less words. I am talking about Diamond Platnumz.
On Thursday 5th January 2017, he represented East Africa music fraternity at the 2016 Glo-CAF Awards Gala held at the International Conference Centre in Abuja, Nigeria. Though there were several performances from equally big names, his live act was to many the most memorable. 9 days later, on 14th January, he performed at the opening ceremony of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations currently underway in Gabon. His Gabon performance when compared to the others that graced the same stage was the complete package; Diamond and his dancers were smart and together performed a dance choreography that was for lack of better words ‘spotlessly on point’. But that was not all for the day. After his performance, he was joined on stage by other artistes who together did the ‘unofficial official’ song for AFCON 2017. This song is receiving great attention in Gabon, Congo Brazzaville, DR Congo and Cameroun among a few other countries. This all happened in the first two weeks of 2017.
If we were to give scores, it is clear that Diamond Platnumz is comfortably leading the East African performance score card for 2017 so far. But again, one will argue that all this he has so far showcased in 2017 was laid out in 2016. Yes, that is what good planning does. It helps you think and plan ahead of time.
We now wait to see whether he can maintain or even surpass this momentum.
On the other hand, it remains to be seen what the other big girls and boys in the region are preparing.
Definitely, we are very aware that many of these artistes are working on performing much better in 2017. In Uganda for example; we know that Eddy Kenzo is putting final touches on his Biology album. Dr Jose Chameleone, Juliana Kanyomozi and Moses Radio & Weasel have new albums in the offing. We also know that Bebe Cool is working on a couple of new projects including collabos with Kenyan, Tanzanian, Ghanaian and South African stars among others. Navio is also in the kitchen spicing up his works.
We also know that Sauti Sol is working on new stuff including some projects with Ugandan artistes. The same is happening in Tanzania were minus Diamond, the likes of Alikiba, Vanessa Mdee, and Navy Kenzo are readying themselves to unleash new and better products.
But like we noted earlier, Diamond Platnumz has kicked off 2017 on a high. We now wait to see which artistes are going to give him a run for his money!
