Teta Diana is a Rwandan traditional and urban, singer and songwriter.
BORN in Nairobi, Kenya, on 5 May 1992, Teta composed her first lyric at age 11— a love song for her father Frazier Birangwa, a Rwandan poet, playwright and arts lecturer, who passed away in 2006.
Teta was raised in Uganda and returned to Rwanda after the 1994 genocide; lived in Butare (now Huye), going to Elena Guerra primary school and Groupe Scolaire Officiel de Butare (now Indatwa n’Inkesha School) for lower secondary education. She completed her upper-level secondary at IFAK in Kigali, majoring in Physics-Chemistry-Mathematics.
In 2012, she was one of the four contestants who represented Rwanda in Tusker Project Fame, a leading East Africa music competition, shaping her view to the musical world. A year later, she joined famous local traditional band Gakondo Group as sole female artist, performing at several occasions including national events and regional festivals such as FESPAM.
Parallelly, Teta wrote and recorded several afro-pop songs, mixing her native Kinyarwanda with English, French and Swahili—where she emerged as a promising young artist with mainstream influence, leading her way through Rwanda’s biggest music competition Primus Guma Guma Super Star (PGGSS), prominent diaspora event Rwanda Day, and performing at concerts in Sweden, Belgium and the United States.
In 2014, Teta wrote and performed Ndaje, a song dedicated to the 20th commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, spreading her message of unity, reconciliation and hope for the young generation. In 2015, the song earned her an award at the Africa Day women empowerment celebrations in Stockholm, Sweden. In December the same year, Teta was also awarded the Celebrating Young Rwandan Achievers Award (CYRWA) by First Lady Jeannette Kagame for using her talent to inspire fellow youth and promote traditional music throughout the country.
