Geoffrey Oryema

Oryema was born in Soroti, in the east of Uganda. His family were deeply knowledgeable about the country’s traditional cultures. Oryema, for example, was encouraged by his father to play the nanga (a seven-string traditional harp) and he also travelled around different parts of Uganda with his mother, a director of the national dance company The Heartbeat of Africa. Other members of the Oryema family were story-tellers, poets and musicians.
