Fort Portal – The 2017 edition of the Uganda Waragi sponsored Cocktails in the Wild that took place over the weekend in Fort Portal was not only an exciting experience but also very educative.
The choice of entertainers, venue and above all activities lined up, were as mouthwatering as the word itself. The nature walks, sight-seeing and interactions with communities living near the Kibaale National Park were memorable.
The event, a brainchild of RoundBob, an online tour and travel company, aims at encouraging Ugandans to venture out and explore their country so as to grow domestic tourism.
For some people though, Cocktails in the Wild is an excuse to step away from the city’s congestion and take in the freshness of the countryside.
Top of the World, a vantage point overlooking three crater lakes and the nearby Kibaale National Park was the venue for this year’s fete.
According to David Gonahasa, the Managing Director of RoundBob, the Cocktails in the wild experience is not merely about the destination but rather the entire journey and exciting pit stops along the way.
“Our underlying aim is to encourage Ugandans to explore and discover their country. We are always on the lookout for the most fascinating places in our own backyard so as to give people an opportunity to appreciate what Uganda has to offer rather than having to travel to other countries,” he explained.
Right from the set off point at the Lugogo Shopping Mall, it was evident that this was going to be one epic journey. The music, bites, beautifully furnished buses were only but a preamble to what awaited guests at the destination. The pit stops in Mityana, Mubende and Fort Portal gave guests the opportunity to sample the roadside cuisines and delicacies as well as take ‘slay’ photos.
At Top of the World, signature Uganda Waragi cocktails such as the Muyenga Sunrise, Kololo Sunset, Melon like it’s hot, among others, mixed by trained mixologists of the Diageo Master Bar Academy kept guests refreshed by the several camp fires.
DJs BK, RPM, Dibo, Skillz and guest DJ Magnum from the famed South African based Universal Music Group entertained the guests all night long. At some point, there was some sort of mini-dance off between a handful of Nigerians and Ugandans. We cannot independently verify who came out top.
Then of course there were those who were ‘unfortunate’ to have their birthdays falling on the day. In addition to the cold night, they received an ‘Ice bucket challenge’ as they embarked on another year of triumph, joy and challenges.
For those who felt like napping, there were tents and cottages; the choice was theirs. Partying went on till the wee hours of the morning.
Edgar Birungi, the Marketing Manager for Spirits at Uganda Breweries stated that Uganda Waragi was elated to be part of Cocktails in the Wild because the platform is one that gives locals the opportunity to celebrate their country’s unique endowments.
“Uganda Waragi is The Spirit of Uganda and has taken the lead in celebrating our Ugandanness for over 50 years. Ours has always been about giving our consumers an unforgettable party experience and Cocktails in the Wild is the ideal platform. What better way to celebrate than do it in the wild!” he said.
The travel back to Kampala on Sunday was also another experience to crown off a memorable weekend. One that was exhilarating, educative and above all, memorable. We can only speculate where the next venue will be held and needless to say, ‘We just cannot wait.’
