The category of RISING DIVA 2011 formerly New Diva of The Year is one category we have to watch out keenly for during DIVA Awards 2011. This is partly because of the quite vague definitions or guidelines that different people have for New Artist. Who is a new artist, who is an upcoming artist, who is an established artist? We featured a piece elaborating “The description of New-Upcoming and Established artists”. As we look forward for the “Rising Diva” nomination it is important to highlight the definition of new artist from best practice elsewhere. The Grammy Awards official guidelines state that Grammy Award for Best New Artist is for a new artist who releases, during the Eligibility Year, the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist. This is not necessarily the first album released by an artist.
Last year saw Samalie Matovu: Omukwano Gunyuma, Margla: Tinku, Julie Mutesasira: Ekikunyumira and Empress: Awete for the New Diva of The Year 2010 nomination. This being a category for which you cannot be nominated more than once, we already have one guideline that any nominee for RISING DIVA should never have been nominated for this category in previous known awards. By known awards for example in Uganda’s case we may refer to DIVA Awards and PAM Awards. For anyone to be nominated as a new artist, they should never have been nominated for any awards at national level in the previous years. Hence Samalie, Margla, Julie and Empress do not belong to this category any more.
We may set another guideline that the artist should have had their first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist within a period of less than four (4) years. Going by these guidelines, who are our potential candidates for RISING DIVA Nomination? The contenders may include Liane the Artist, Minayo Brenda, Pretty Glo, Walden, G Snake, Maureen Kabasita, Natasha Sinayobye, Shana, Naira Ali, Hindu Asha, Naava Zziwa, Jemimah Sanyu and several others. The key questions that nomination panel should pay attentions to are 1: When did the artist produce their first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist? 2) For which awards has the artist been nominated before in previous years?
If we pay attention to the above questions, we expect to see a highly competitive RISING DIVA category made of true fresh and rising talent.
